What is Twestival?
8 Feb

Water, water everywhere...
Is it just me or are we (and I mean the collective “we”) really talking and listening to each other? The kind of talking that leads to understanding, to action, to change.
I know “change” is a word that we’ve heard a lot in the last two years. Some don’t think it’s possible. I do. I’m seeing and feeling a turning of the tide.
Consider the story of Twestival.
I’m addicted to Twitter. I’ve met some really cool, funny and hella smart people on the social media service.
Nearly three weeks ago, word started spreading in the Twitosphere on how Tweeters could be a catalyst in the change that President Obama inspired.
One result is Twestival. On Thursday, Feb. 12, volunteers in more than 175 cities around the world will host a fundraiser for the group charity: water. The nonprofit brings clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.
Right now 1.1 billion people on the planet don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water. That’s one in six of us, according to charity: water.
Proudly, I can say the QC is one of the cities involved. On Jan. 31, a group of us met at Morehead Tavern for a planning session. Fueled by the power of possibility and faith, we set our fund-raising goal at $5,000, since it takes at least $4,000 to dig a well.
We divvied up the tasks, and we were off. *please imagine roadrunner sound here*
Within a week and with the help and kindness of many people and business, there’s a venue (CANS), speakers (Terri Bennett) and prizes (a cruise donated by CruiseSource.com). Every cent we raise will go to the charity.
We set different ticket prices ($5 to $100 for VIP) since money is an object for most of us. And you do not have to be on Twitter to attend.
If you attend, you will be contributing to a great cause. You will see the result of people who care coming together. And you may make some new friends or connections that could lead to something bigger.
I think of Twestival as being a rock that we’re tossing into still water. I fully expect an incredible ripple effect.
